Chef Norman Van Aken's 1921 Is Set To Open This Summer...

Chef Norman Van Aken, Florida’s only multiple James Beard award winning chef, author of six cook books and a memoir, and known as the founding father of New World cuisine, announces his newest restaurant, 1921 by Norman Van Aken (“1921”).

Opening in Mount Dora this summer, the refined rustic restaurant has a forward thinking outlook on ingredients and culinary traditions that encompass the local community, as well as Florida cuisine.

Situated in a converted home built in 1921, the restaurant serves as a reminder that America, and its varying historic cuisines, are made up of a vast array of recipes and flavors imparted by a wide range of explorers and immigrants. These culinary styles have become entrenched in the land and local communities found throughout Florida and the world.

“With close access to some of the best local produce, meat, and seafood Florida has to offer, Mount Dora is a fitting location for us in terms of sourcing ingredients for our menu and connecting the restaurant with the local community that shapes our philosophy,” said Chef Van Aken. “I will be working directly with Chef de Cuisine, Camilo Velasco, to celebrate modern cooking while also incorporating time honored traditions of Florida.”

The philosophy of 1921 embraces sustainable practices when sourcing ingredients. The restaurant will work closely with local farms and purveyors within Mount Dora and the surrounding area, maintaining an allegiance to the local growers, producers and food artisans of Florida.

Chef Van Aken states, “1921 is my love letter to Florida and encompasses the totality of the state from its cuisine to its art to its culture and beyond. Just as the Modernist artists create their works from the tapestry of varying art styles, we create our menu out of the intricate matrix of cuisines found here.”

Working in collaboration, Chef Van Aken and Chef Velasco will serve up hand crafted cuisine from the state of the art kitchen. Menu offerings at 1921 will change regularly, providing guests the opportunity to experience a wide selection of fresh Florida flavors from snacks and starters such as the Grilled Okeechobee Mushroom Tostadas ($9), to flatbreads and salads like the Smoky Maduro Plantain Flatbread ($14) and Florida Avocado and Summer Squash Salad ($11).

Main plates include such items like the Wood Grilled Eye of Ribeye with red chimichurri marinated sweetbreads, ember roasted carrots and tomatillo ($36) and the Sour Orange Mojo Roasted Cornish Hen ($24), cooked in 1921’s wood oven.

The restaurant’s dynamic beverage and bar program will feature a library of unique spirits with multiple ice shapes as well as cocktails including barrel-aged, carbonated on tap, and seasonal creations. 1921’s Wine Director, Scott Geisler, will work closely with Chef Velasco to complement the menu, selecting from the restaurant’s list of global wines varying from eclectic to familiar, recent releases, and storied vintages. Additionally, the beverage program will highlight draft beers from multiple Central Florida craft breweries as well as a variety of bottled and canned beers from around the world.

The opening of Chef Van Aken’s highly anticipated 1921 restaurant completes the elegant Mount Dora Modernism Museum complex. The creation, design and execution of this exceptional cultural, shopping and dining collaboration is the brainchild of partner Main Street Leasing.  A feast for the eyes, as well as the palate, the restaurant features an extensive collection of artwork, with select pieces on loan from the Modernism Museum. This unique joint partnership between Main Street Leasing and Chef Van Aken brings the art of dining to life in its truest sense.

Reservations are available beginning Tuesday, August 16th by calling (352)-385-1921, or by going to http://1921nva.com/

Fort Lauderdale Marriott Pompano Beach Resort & Spa

When deciding where to stay for a fun getaway, there are certainly lots of good hotels and condos available along the shores of South Florida, which I personally believe have some of the best beaches in the world. But, why settle for good when you can have great?

The Fort Lauderdale Marriott Pompano Beach Resort & Spa is really a bit of a hidden gem, and is actually more of a boutique style resort that caters to leisure and business travelers alike. While no two Marriott properties are the same, this location really delivers the best of the resort lifestyle with the simple pleasures of Florida beach living.

During my stay here, I really kept asking myself if I was at a hotel in Florida, or had I been mysteriously transported to a resort in the Caribbean? The resort is set on the oceanfront in Pompano Beach, a city that is ripe for discovery and one that has recently been named one of the top 10 “up-and-coming” U.S. destinations by TripAdvisor. So if you want to venture outside of your little slice of paradise, there is more than enough to keep you occupied. If you need something for your business, you can utilize a grand total of nearly 4,000 square feet of meeting space for a customized event that will have guests talking for years.

Guests of Fort Lauderdale Marriott Pompano Beach can enjoy fresh local fare and speakeasy style drinks at McCoy’s Oceanfront where you can enjoy a classic cocktail menu that features fresh pressed juices and dark spirits paired with seasonal seafood in a casual setting. If you want to be pampered, you can treat yourself to a well deserved massage, facial, manicure/pedicure, body scrub or waxing as you hear the therapeutic waves crash outside of SiSpa. Of course there is the poolside relaxation with two pools and a hot tub and beach access with water sports.

What's really impressive is the fact that private balconies with views of the Atlantic Ocean are afforded to all of its generously appointed 194 guest rooms and 25 suites. This was my view.

Speaking of those guest rooms and suites, after you're done indulging in stunning ocean views from your private balcony, you can get a peaceful night's sleep on pillow top mattresses, in a very spacious room. After your beauty rest you can wake up to a Florida sunrise and start the day with a newspaper delivered to your room upon request.

If you want to keep in shape and keep up that beach body, Marriott Pompano Beach has you covered there as well. Not only do they have the latest in top of the line cardiovascular equipment, with free weights, treadmills, elliptical machines and bikes, but the fitness center also includes a stunning view of the ocean skyline.

All work and no play makes for a dull day, so you must go outside and play. There are two very nice swimming pools and a fantastic hot tub on the property with plenty of lounge chairs and towels for all. If the beach is calling your name, you can enjoy private access to a gorgeous beach with Jet skis’ available, Surfing and Volleyball, or you can just relax and chill in a private cabana.

Night time is the perfect time to hang out with family and friends, and Marriott Pompano Beach has plenty of things to keep the conversation going all night long. The fire pit was a hot spot, literally and figuratively during my stay and many people seemed to enjoy drinks from McCoy’s and conversation by the fire with a cool ocean breeze at night. The pools and hot tub are also open at night.

If you are planning on making a charming holiday escape with the comforts of home, look no further than Fort Lauderdale Marriott Pompano Beach Resort as they have a special “Home Away From Home for the Holidays” package available now.

Available for stays from November 1, 2015 through January 2, 2016, the Home Away From Home for the Holidays package includes overnight accommodations (based on a two-night minimum stay), daily buffet breakfast at McCoy’s Oceanfront, a special delivery of a gingerbread house kit for in-room family fun, Kids Club access for one-half day for up to two children, a 15 percent discount on all treatments at SiSpa, and a Shopper’s Savings Book courtesy of The Galleria Mall in Fort Lauderdale. Rates start at just $199 per night. For reservations call 954-782-0100 or visit www.pompanomarriott.com.

I was really impressed with this Marriott property and was sad to leave. Everything here from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave is first rate, and they have done a wonderful job of transporting guests to a unique slice of paradise. In case you don't take my word for it, the resort just received the 2015 Orbitz Worldwide “Best in Stay Elite Award” fronting the area’s finest beach and providing its guests with the simple pleasures of Florida beach living.

Flavors of Florida at the Bohemian Hotel Celebration

Bohemian Hotel
700 Bloom St.
Celebration, FL.
(407) 566-6000

View Website Here

After spending time at the Bohemian Hotel Savannah as the executive chef at the hotels Rocks on the River restaurant, Chef Zachary Martin has  returned to the Bohemian Hotel Celebration.

To kickoff his return and to spread the word about the refreshed menu, Tastes Of Orlando was invited to a very special Flavors of Florida bloggers dinner.

Chef Martin was at the property from 2008 through 2012, and with his return, the Bohemian Hotel Celebration has introduced a refreshed menu to its Lakeside Bar & Grill. The new menu features fresh Florida ingredients that focus on classic American foods with a southern contemporary twist. Born and raised in New Orleans, Chef Martin’s hometown roots have influenced his innovative culinary creations and his modern approach to classic cuisine. Chef Martin’s techniques and talents have been fine-tuned through mentoring by the likes of Emeril Lagasse and Bernard Carmouche.

The refreshed menu is focused on locally sourced and sustainable ingredients from some of Florida's best all natural farms like Waterkist Farms and Cahaba farms who grow most of their produce hydroponically. Other farms the hotel uses for ingredients like Pero Family Farms and Arc Farms, have a big focus on being environmentally friendly and being 100% sustainable farmers.

123TOOWe started our evening off with a Summer Corn Bisque with citrus yogurt.

The bisque was made with organic corn from Alderman farms, and was full of flavor in every bite.
123ToO

For the greens portion of our meal we had the Beets and Bleu.

This salad is made with organic mixed greens, roasted beets, pickled red onions, bacon, and bleu cheese with an aged balsamic vinaigrette.

I really enjoyed the salad and all of the unique flavors and textures. It was quite tasty, and was paired very nicely with the Kessler Chardonnay 2011.

123ToO
Our next dish was the Crab Cake.

The cake was served with shaved fennel, tomatoes, red onion salad, and a delicious champagne yogurt sauce

123ToO
To continue on in our seafood selection we were treated to Chilean Sea Bass.

The fish was topped with prawn butter and sat atop a bed of soba noodles, pea tendrils and shiitake mushrooms in a coconut curry sauce.

The fish was nice and flaky and I thought the addition of a coconut curry sauce was a nice flavor enhancer. Both the crab cake and the sea bass were paired with a wonderfuly crisp Robert Mondavi Fume Blanc 2010.

123ToOOur final entree of the evening was a Filet Mignon with summer roasted vegetables and roasted fingerling potatoes.

The steak was topped with a fresh herb butter that helped it to literally melt in your mouth.

Of course steaks go good with red wines, so it was paired with a Simi Cabernet Sauvignon 2011.

123ToO
We ended the evening with a decadent Key Lime Pie with sugared lime slices and dried raspberry.

The pie was very light and had just the right amount of sweetness and bitterness.

One of the many highlights about Kessler Collection hotels is their passion not just for food and fine lodging, but for the arts. As with other Kessler properties, The Bohemian Hotel in Celebration has a passion for the arts at its foundation. The hotel’s Grand Bohemian Gallery showcases more than 75 works of art by local, regional and internationally recognized artists.

During our dinner we were treated to a meet and greet with Tom Sadler, and got to watch him paint one of his beautiful oil paintings.

Tom Sadler has dedicated his efforts towards capturing the light, color, and mood of the Central Florida landscape. The intense light, combined with the natural beauty of the many lakes, rivers, and parks of the area provide a never-ending source of inspiration. His paintings come to life as a celebration of this beauty found in nature.

Just like Tom Sadler's art work, The Bohemian Hotel in Celebration is full of natural beauty, Floridian charm and inspiration.
The hotel has all of the modern amenities you expect in an upscale hotel, but is set in an intimate boutique setting that is reminiscent of the grand lakeside and seaside inns of the early 1900's.

The Bohemian Hotel Celebration is a great place for romance during a starlit cocktail hour as well as a great place for business meetings, with over 5,000 square feet of indoor meeting space. The hotel boasts  two lakeside terraces for outdoor events, exquisite cuisine and a convenient business center. From artistically designed buffets and décor to creative dishes and live music, events can be arranged surrounding a particular theme. Along with multiple
function spaces, the property offers a lakefront meeting room where attendants can enjoy the beautiful view outside.

The Bohemian Hotel Celebration is a great place to enjoy the perfect balance of old-world charm combined with contemporary elegance in the warm and welcoming town of Celebration.
