Metro Diner may not be the type of place where you’d expect contemporary culinary techniques, a commitment to creating dishes from scratch, an award winning presentation, unique recipes and imaginative twists on old classics, but it is.

It’s that type of place because they cook with heart and for the love of food.

Since the original location building’s humble beginnings in 1938 and its revival as Metro Diner in 1992, Jacksonville’s favorite place for breakfast has been serving satisfied guests for nearly 25 years.

In 2000, master chef Mark Davoli and family took over and elevated the menu to include innovative new dishes created from local ingredients. Along with culinary creativity, the Davoli family brought more than 80 years of combined restaurant experience to Metro Diner.

To this day, Metro Diner has locations in 14 states, with 29 of those locations in Florida

Known for warm, welcoming service, familiar faces and award winning food, Metro Diner is a go to eatery for locals, visitors and those just passing through town. Stop in for breakfast, lunch or dinner in select locations, and they'd love to have you.

The San Francisco Benedict with two poached eggs, Canadian bacon, sliced avocado, and tomato and home fries with cheese, peppers and onions was pretty damn good.

The Bissell Breakfast at Metro Diner with two eggs over easy, bacon, an English muffin, hash browns well done and a short stack of pancakes.

The Short Stack of Pancakes that comes with the Bissell Breakfast… You can also substitute this for a Belgium Waffle.

Even though we ordered enough food to be stuffed, I had to get the Spicy Honey Chicken Biscuit at Metro Diner made with a fried chicken tender with spicy honey on a biscuit. Simple and Glorious.

We really enjoyed Metro Diner in Orlando… I thought it was pretty good food for a chain, and we will definitely be back to try some other items like Fried Chicken and Waffles..or how about a Beef Pot Pie?

Metro Diner is open on Monday to Thursday from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm, Friday and Saturday they are open from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm, and Sunday they are open from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm.

MX Taco

When I heard of another taco spot opening in Orlando, I pretty much rolled my eyes and shrugged my shoulders and said..”Great another taco place.”

We are almost suffering from taco overload, and there is a race to the finish line on what the next hottest foodie fad will be in Orlando... poke or ramen.

But then when I saw that this new spot was being helmed by Chef Ryan Manning and when I saw his concept and idea… I said…”Ohhhh, Wait a minute.”

I met Ryan at the Ritz-Carlton, Grande Lakes when I first previewed Highball and Harvest, as he was the sous chef there at the time. He explained to me that he was currently in the process of opening a restaurant in the Milk District of Downtown Orlando, and I knew I had to check it out.

After leaving Orlando, Chef Ryan moved to Mexico to work at The Ritz-Carlton, Cancun where he had the opportunity to work his way through the cuisine and culture of Mexico while working and traveling for the hotel’s culinary experience.

He realized that much of what he thought he knew about Mexican food was actually not Mexican at all and that the cuisine was much deeper as you break it down from region to region.

Upon returning to the United States he became the banquet chef of The Ritz-Carlton, Washington D.C. This created a great opportunity to partner with the Mexican Embassy and Cultural Institute to share the flavors of Mexico with the guests of the embassy.

Earlier this month Chef Ryan returned to Orlando to open MX Taco – a fast-casual taqueria focusing on producing the flavors that he experienced through his travels and work in Mexico.

The menu is unique from the others around the area as it features the states where each item comes from and delves into some of the unique flavors you don’t often find in the United States, including Shrimp Tikin-Xic which has its origins several hundred years ago in the Mayan Empire.

MX Taco is a culinary journey through the different regions of Mexico, and after a visit here, you will quickly find that Not All Tacos are Created Equal. MX Taco is on another level.

A trio of House made Hot Sauces at MX Taco with Chile Guajillo, Chile Habanero and Chile de arbol is available on every table, which is only 4 for now.

The Guacamole and Tomatillo salsa and chips were both fresh and delicious with great flavor.

We enjoyed our sampling of Agua Frescas with Watermelon, Horchata, Hibiscus, Pineapple and Horchata with Coconut.

Street Tacos at MX Taco are on point. The Conchita Pibil from the Yucatan Region on the left with bitter orange pulled pork and pickled onions and the Carnitas from the Michoacan region on the right with onions and cilantro...both were outstanding.

Esquites or Mexican Street Corn was simply phenomenal, perhaps one of the best I've had.

Shrimp Tikin-Xic from the Yucatan region with achiote bitter orange shrimp and pickled onion and a Quesadilla con Chorizo from Mexico City with Oaxaca queso and chorizo.

This Pozole will warm you right up and is pretty hearty with a hominy soup and tomato pork broth, served with a chicharone. Pozole is a Thursday Special at MX Taco.

Bistek con Sikil Pak from Yucatan with steak, pickled onions, and pumpkin seed sauce on the left and Bistek en Salsa Roja on the right from the Sonora Region with braised steak, pepper sauce and avocado were all unbelievably good.

For a vegetarian option, on the left is a Comote con Mole taco with sweet potato, beans, queso, Cotija, pickled onion and salsa mole from the Oaxaca region, on the right is a Mole Poblano taco from the Puebla area of Mexico with chicken, queso Cotija, onion and crema.

The Avocado Ice Cream is AMAZING. It was very creamy and refreshing topped with toasted pumpkin seeds and shaved Mexican chocolate..

Just like the restaurant itself, the kitchen at MX Tacos is pretty small as well, but there is just enough room to make the taco magic happen.

As you walk into MX Taco, Chef Ryan’s goal is to transport you to Mexico with smell of traditional braises and chilies in the air with a guiding principle to provide the authentic flavors of Mexican Cuisine.

With fresh ingredients prepared in the right manner, the clean and oftentimes healthy dishes of Mexico do not require excesses in spices and ingredients. The goal is to take you on a journey through the states of Mexico with every bite you take.

MX Taco is open everyday from 11:00 am to 10:00pm. They are in soft opening from now until the end of January with plans to open fully and have some additional patio seating by the beginning of February.

Arooga's

227 South Semoran Blvd.
Winter Park, FL 32792
407-986-9464
View Website Here

Arooga’s calls itself a slightly above average grille house and sports bar, and I like that. Better food than most sports bars around, lots of TV’s and a fun clean environment to enjoy sport and food.

Most of the food is made in house prepared by chefs instead of factory workers as they call it. The fresh baked bread, wings, sauces, salad dressings, the house made soups all taste pretty darn good.

The TVs here, are TV-er. You can see every game from every seat in the restaurant, and they mean every game, because they have every sports package available all 365 days of the year on nearly 1000 flat screen tv's between all of their locations.

They have free wi-fi, Buzztime trivia and NTN Texas Hold 'em with over 80 menu items under $8.99, and several other items priced over $8.99 for the rich folks. So if you're looking for great food prepared and served by above-average people that prepare and serve great food, you'll find it at Arooga's.

Based out of Pennsylvania, this is the only Florida location of Arooga’s. They have a handful of locations in CT, NY, and NJ, and the Florida location makes number 20 overall.

Almost all Arooga’s Locations have over 30 beers on tap or in a bottle, but they have some pretty good cocktails also, like this Spicy Bloody Mary on the left and an Ultimate Long Isdland on the right.

There is plenty of room at the bar here also, and Arooga's has partnered with a local Craft Distillery to produce Sagoora Premium vodka. (Arooga's spelled backwards) it is distilled 4 times from grain, charcoal filtered and hand sealed.

I've never had Fried Banana Peppers before, but these beer battered tots with a Troegs Beer Troegenator Doppelbock batter with sriracha aioli were quite tasty.

Amish Pierogies were very good also, actually surprisingly good and perfect two bite size that was great for sharing.

I'm always a sucker for Truffle Tots, and these Truffle Tots at Arooga’s with white truffle oil, truffle aioli and shaved parmesan did not disappoint.

Ok, so the Ghost Face Killa wings are a challenge wing that requires you to sign a waiver as they have a dry ghost pepper rub. They were good, They were Hot, but they were not that hot. Mostly a front tongue burn, but hardly worth signing a waiver for.

The Philly Cheese Steak Boli is really damn good with shaved steak, beer caramelized onions, green peppers and mozzarella with cheddar and house marina. Boli is short for Stromboli.

BBQ Pulled Pork N Bacon Mac N Cheese was delicious, this is a huge skillet of creamy white cheddar mac n cheese piled with sustainably raised, no antibiotic ever pulled pork, Hickory Smoked Honey BBQ and topped with crispy bacon.

The Donut Grilled Cheese was happiness in your mouth with a griddle glazed donut, American Cheese, and 4 strips of applewood bacon.

The Signature Baked Potato Soup with thick chunks of baked potato and savory bacon in a creamy soup topped with mozzarella & cheddar cheeses, then baked in the oven and drizzled with sour cream was pretty exceptional as well.

The Prime Brisket Sandwich at Arooga’s was really good, but it looked much better in pictures as this was a tad bit smaller and not as fancy as it looked. The 14hr smoked Brisket was good on the multi grain bread.

Funnel Cake Fries were a great dessert to share at the table and quite delicious.

Arooga’s… A slightly above average sports bar? I was actually impressed with the quality of the food here and the flavors. The menu is huge, and there is something for everyone, and there is also a TV for everyone... I would say it's a little bit more than slightly above average for a sports bar.

If you're looking for fun and good food, you'll find that at Arooga’s. If you're looking for your boyfriend and/or girlfriend, they haven't seen him and/or her.

Arooga’s is open every day from 11 am until 2 am, The kitchen is open until midnight or later.
