The Glass Knife is Opening Soon in Winter Park

TGK_Blog_Exterior-2.jpg
276 S Orlando Ave.
Winter Park FL, 32789

Coming this fall, one of Winter Park’s premier business districts will welcome a new cafe, The Glass Knife, that aims to become Central Florida’s go-to destination for its line of elevated, decadent cakes, elegant desserts and other sweet treats.

The restaurant will also offer a savory menu for breakfast and lunch, plus a variety of evening items.

The Glass Knife is inspired by a loving mother and hobbyist baker whose talents transformed her culinary passion into a creative profession. Fostered through a collection of family and friends, the recipes shared during these time-honored baking sessions are the nostalgic basis for what will come to life within The Glass Knife.

The cafe was developed by local entrepreneur Steve Brown, as a way to share his memories of baking alongside his mother, Jacque, and his vision to establish a sophisticated, yet comfortable community gathering place that encourages togetherness and celebration.

The location’s design will tell a story that brings its guests back to a specific moment in time, whether through the delicious cakes and pastries, savory fare or the artfully displayed collection of 1920s era glass cake knives which were a treasured collection of Brown’s mother and serve as the origin of its name.

Under the direction and deft hand of Executive Chef Stuart Whitfield, who has worked for some of the country’s premiere hospitality brands (Four Seasons, Le Cirque, David Burke & Donatella, The Walt Disney Company), The Glass Knife plans to make its mark on Orlando’s ever-evolving dining scene by providing its guests with world-class food and service, presented within a refined, yet approachable, environment.

The Glass Knife will offer a variety of stunningly delicious cake options including its Classics, which will embrace timeless family favorites like Red Velvet, Carrot and Coconut cakes, all with Chef Stuart’s modern twist. The Glass Knife Signatures will be created as one-of-a-kind, patisserie-style cakes, that will bring a refined selection of celebratory sweets to Winter Park.

Chef Stuart will craft a lineup of artisan donuts including melt-in-your-mouth versions of Lemon Meringue Pie and Peanut Butter Cup. A variety of additional fresh baked goods and pastries including scones, croissants, and cookies will also be featured.

Recognizing that nothing goes better with dessert than a great cup of coffee and setting the stage to become Winter Park’s premier coffee destination, The Glass Knife will use carefully sourced, fair-trade beans prepared by expert baristas within a unique and engaging serving experience that will utilize stylish and sophisticated technology.

Those looking to combine both sweet and savory will not be disappointed by the cafes offerings, which will include breakfast fare along with soup, salads and sandwiches, plus heartier choices like chicken pot pie alongside a selection of craft beer and fine wine.

Linda's La Cantina Steak House

Orlando, FL 32803

Linda’s La Cantina is pretty much a staple in the Orlando community. If you have lived in Orlando for any amount of time and driven down Colonial drive, surely you've seen the big red and white sign as you pass by.

They have been serving the Central Florida area since 1947 with quality steaks that are U.S.D.A. choice or above and are cut right on site. They are grilled hot and fast to sear in all the juices, and that helps to make them a cut above. In a world of constant change, especially in Orlando, and in the restaurant business, it's pretty remarkable that they have survived, and still have quite a loyal following. La Cantina celebrated 60 years in March of 2007.

What you get at Linda’s is great quality steaks at a medium price range. They are not at the price level of say Christner's, or a Ruth Chris type of steak house, but they are still more expensive than a standard chain type of steakhouse.

The average price for a good cut of steak is about $32.00 for a New York Strip, and that's a 14oz. Strip. Also at Linda’s, a salad and your choice of side, along with hot fresh bread is included in the price of your steak. If you factor that in, and the quality of the cut of meats they serve, it's a pretty good deal.

The inside of Linda’s La Cantina is a bit sparse and very traditional. It's very dimly lit with wood and brass accents and red and white checkered table cloths for a real old school style steakhouse feel.

Although there is an extensive wine list on the table, they do not have any specialty cocktails or mixed drinks on the menu. The good news is, the bar staff here is very capable, and they will make whatever you desire. A Moscow mule on the left and a dirty martini on the right, were great pre dinner drinks.

We ordered the Coconut Shrimp with Spice Plum sauce for an appetizer, and they were pretty tasty, although a tad on the sweet side.

The House Salad, with French dressing.  A salad is served with your choice of dressing and is complementary to any entree selection.

Steak is what they do here, and Linda's La Cantina does a damn fine job at great steaks that are moderately priced. This is the 16oz. Ribeye that just melts in your mouth.

The side choices we decided on was the baked potato and steamed broccoli.

They have a 14oz. and an 18oz. NY Strip at Linda’s. This 14oz version was delicious and perfectly cooked. There was also plenty left over for me to have an excellent lunch the next day.

fb48d0f0-975c-4c7a-9a13-a89be5a901f4.png
A slice of Coconut cake and some coffee was a perfect ending to our visit.

This is quite a unique establishment with a great deal of history going all the way back to when Orlando still had dirt roads. There has a been only a handful of owners since the beginning, but the original Linda was the longest proprietor of this fine establishment. It was torn down and remodeled in 1972, burnt down in a fire in 1994 and reopened in 1995 after a six month rebuild process.

Through the next several years some family members left, while others came, and the one constant was the traditions that had been passed down and were still treasured and protected by the ones that cared enough to stay the course.

In 2001 Linda retired to the shock of family and all that had seen her behind the desk. Although missed greatly, it was good to know that she was enjoying her golden years doing things she never had time to. Her dedication to the customers and to her family made her a matriarch in the truest sense, and that tradition still lives on today.

Linda’s La Cantina is open from 4:00 pm until 9:30 pm Tuesday through Saturday. They are closed on Sunday and Monday. I would suggest making a reservation, as they tend to fill up fast with the limited hours.

Buca di Beppo Opens New Location in Celebration

20170826_204942.jpg

6282 W Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy.
Celebration, FL 34747
(321) 219-2822

The first Buca di Beppo opened its doors in 1993 in the basement of a Minneapolis apartment building.

Since then, the brand has grown to over 100 locations worldwide. The all new Celebration / Kissimmee location marks the third one in the Central Florida area, and the seventh one in the entire state of Florida.

Buca di Beppo strives to capture the fun and enthusiasm of an authentic Italian family gathering along with delectable food. If you have ever dined with an Italian family, then you understand that the food is always a big priority and the portions are more than plenty. The dishes served up here are inspired by the cuisine enjoyed for generations in villages throughout Italy and are served family style, meant to be shared by the entire table.

The menu is inspired by various places around and throughout Italy, as Buca tries to serve up authentic Italian fare. They have continued to innovate and create recipes beyond their traditional style by adding new menu items inspired by Northern and Southern Italian cuisine.

Everything from salads, antipasto platters, flatbreads, mussels, calamari and a large variety of pastas fill the menu. A Buca small serves two to three, and a Buca large serves up to 5, as everything here is served a la carte family style only.

Inside of every Buca di Beppo restaurant is an eclectic setting designed to make every occasion a party. The vintage setting is always a point of conversation with all of the walls covered in family photos and candid shots of Italian American icons such as Sophia Loren and Joe DiMaggio. Each room at Buca is themed, and all restaurants have a Pope table which is the largest single round table in a room with a bust of the Pope as the centerpiece.

The bar is very colorful and lively and continues on the eclectic decor and whimsical lighting.

All Buca locations have a large wine list, but they also serve up pretty good cocktails like the Buca Berry Lemonade on the left and a Sparkling Sangria on the right.

The Antipasto Platter is a new addition to the menu and it is loaded with prosciutto, pepperoni, salami, provolone & fresh mozzarella with arugula, pepperoncini, green & black olives, roasted red peppers, marinated artichokes & Parmesan crostini.

Fried Mozzarella with housemade marinara sauce is an old standby, but it's always delicious.

Italian Sausage & Arugula is also a new addition to the menu and it is topped with spicy Italian sausage, prosciutto, mozzarella, provolone, garlic, arugula and balsamic glaze. This was really good, and a bit spicy.

Our table really enjoyed the Chicken Carbonara that is made with a cut up chicken breast, prosciutto, peas and garlic in rich Alfredo sauce.

I love a good Eggplant Parmigiana, and in fact this one at Buca di Beppo is as close to homemade as I have had. This is battered, fried and stacked eggplant topped with homemade marinara sauce, Roma tomatoes, basil & mozzarella cheese.

The Quattro al Forno is a good way to sample a few different things. This dish comes with four items...Cheese Manicotti, Chicken Cannelloni, Cheese Ravioli & Stuffed Shells.

Although the sauce was a tad sweet, everyone at our table really loved the Chicken Marsala with baby portobello mushrooms in a traditional Marsala wine reduction sauce.

You can't go wrong with any dessert selection at Buca di Beppo, but this gigantic slice of Tiramisu is pretty fabulous. It features homemade ladyfingers soaked in dark rum & espresso, layered with sweetened mascarpone cheese & topped with cocoa & crumbled hazelnut biscotti . If you add an espresso with this...its close to perfect.

I've been to a few Buca di Beppo locations with family, friends, a wedding reception..you name it, and everyone has always had a great time. Sit back and listen to the classic tunes of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin and be prepared to eat.

The friendly staff and whimsical atmosphere are sure to be a hit as you can't help but laugh at all of the funny pictures of Italian family members throughout history. Stop by the new location in Celebration and say Ciao.
