The first Florida location of Firebirds Wood Fired Grill is officially open for business in Winter Park at The Market at Mills Park located at 1562 North Mills Ave. in front of Fresh Market.

The restaurant specializes in aged steaks, fresh seafood, chicken and ribs seared over an authentic wood fired grill. Firebirds is Known for its Classic American cuisine infused with bold flavors, fresh herbs and spices. Winter Park guests will enjoy the high quality selections at moderate prices, top-notch service and warm ambiance that have made Firebirds successful at all 34 locations nationwide.

Firebirds CEO Mark Eason is a Winter Park native and has strong ties to the area. He has more than 35 years of restaurant industry experience working for companies such as Steak & Ale, Lone Star Steakhouse & Saloon and Bertucci’s.

Firebirds Wood Fired Grill believes in supporting the community, using local firewood and making every recipe in-house with the freshest ingredients. The Winter Park Firebirds will also feature artwork by local artist Leslie Neumann. Her critically acclaimed, enchanting landscapes of Florida’s coast have been featured in exhibits at all 34 Firebirds locations nationwide.

From the Chile Rubbed Delmonico to the Bleu Cheese Filet, each steak is hand-cut and grilled to perfection. Other signature items such as the Wood Grilled Salmon, Firebirds BLT Salad, Lobster Spinach Queso and Creme Brulée Cheesecake are also prepared on site from start to finish. A Kids’ Menu with items approved by the National Restaurant Association’s Kids LiveWell program, includes Grilled Chicken, Sirloin Steak and more, with the choice of two sides.

The 7,450-square-foot restaurant features an exhibition kitchen, an indoor stone fireplace, and two “wine walls” in the dining room and at the host stand. The award-winning FIREBAR™, complete with a waterfall of colorful bottles, hosts a selection of private Firebirds label wines and specialty cocktails such as the Double Black Diamond Martini® infused with natural, fresh pineapple for 21 days. In addition, the cozy outdoor patio features its own bar embellished with unique red art glass across the back, a sophisticated steel bar top and upscale chilled wine bin. Dark woods, vivid colors and comfortable seating create a cozy and intimate dining room setting.

Tastes of Orlando was invited to a special soft opening test run and was able to sample a few dishes and cocktails. Everything we ate tasted pretty spectacular, especially the Chile Rubbed Delmonico Steak. Although I do not comment much as to the service a restaurant provides during a soft opening, the staff at Firebirds did a fairly decent job for a test run.

We started our evening off with the Lobster Spinach Queso.

This is a house favorite, and I thought all the flavors of this queso blended perfectly well together.

The BLT Salad is another house favorite dish. It was light, refreshing, and loaded with tasty bacon.

The salads are pretty big at Firebirds, so two people can easily split one salad.

Firebirds specializes in meats, and the hand carved Prime Rib encrusted with fresh herbs and pepper, is pretty spectacular.

The Prime Rib is available in 12oz. or 16oz. size. I ordered the 12oz., and had plenty leftover.

The Chile Rubbed Delmonico was an instant favorite. This is a 12oz. steak rubbed down with chile and other spices, then seared to lock the in the flavors.

For desert I ordered the Creme Brulee Cheesecake.

Firebirds cheesecake is very good. It is light and airy, so its not heavy at all and it's topped with caramelized sugar for the brule part and has a strawberry drizzle.

Firebirds is open Monday – Thursday from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. and Friday – Saturday from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. Half-priced appetizers and drink specials from the FIREBAR™ are served from 4 – 6:30 p.m. at both the bar and outdoor patio. The restaurant also offers banquet services, catering and gift cards. In addition, guests can register for Firebirds’ E-Club to receive exclusive offers, promotions and a birthday gift.

First Watch: New Summer Menu Items

3402 Technological Ave.
Orlando, FL, 32817

View Website Here

First Watch, the breakfast, brunch and lunch restaurant, has added three new seasonal menu items that will be available through Sunday, August 17.

In addition to the food offerings, long time fans of First Watch will be happy to know that the brand has finally added Iced Coffee to the menu that is available year round.

Those new menu items include the BLT Benedict, Shrimp and Grits, and the Bruleed Banana Waffle. Chris Tomasso, chief marketing officer for First Watch says "they are very excited to offer a new spin on some breakfast and brunch classics that offer a little bit of everything, a little sweet, a little savory and we think our guests will thoroughly enjoy them.”

The BLT Benedict is served with two poached eggs on toasted ciabatta with bacon, tomato, hollandaise sauce, lemon-dressed arugula, avocado slices, fresh herbs, and includes a side of fresh seasonal fruit.

I really liked the flavors and textures of this dish and would certainly order it again. The ciabatta added a nice crispy layer of support for all of the toppings.

The Shrimp & Grits features sautéed shrimp and Andouille sausage in a Cajun low-country reduction with house-roasted tomatoes, onions, peppers, corn and fresh herbs on Cheddar Parmesan cheesy grits served with ciabatta toast.

First Watch has done a pretty good job of creating an authentic "Low Country" shrimp and grits. The flavors were light and fresh with an earthy note, and the Andouille sausage added the right amount of spice.

The Bruleed Banana Waffle is a light and airy waffle that  is topped with caramelized bruleed bananas, brown sugar glazed bacon, a sweet cream sauce drizzle and bacon-infused syrup.

This was really good, but it was really sweet. I like sweets, but this was too much for me. I recommend you order this and split it with at least one other person.

I personally am a big fan of iced coffee, don't get me wrong, I like it hot too, but sometimes I just want iced coffee. That being said, I don't why it took so long to add iced coffee to the menu at a place that specializes in breakfast and brunch. So all my fellow iced coffee drinkers out there can now rejoice as First Watch has finally decided to make it a staple. My coffee was perfectly sweetened and ice cold, and I will certainly have some again on my next visit.

First Watch is a recipient of more than 200 “Best Of” accolades in markets across the country and was recently recognized with a 2014 “MenuMasters Award” by Nation’s Restaurant News for Best Healthful Innovation for its Pesto Chicken Quinoa Bowl. The “Daytime Café” features traditional favorites including pancakes, omelets, salads and sandwiches, as well as signature specialties such as the Chickichanga, Healthy Turkey Omelet, and Fresh Fruit Crepes.

First Watch serves its entire menu seven days a week from 7 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The restaurant also offers guests complimentary newspapers and free Wi-Fi Internet access.

Wolfies Pizzamia

1905 N. Orange Ave.
Orlando FL 32804
(407) 237-0921

Adding to that ever growing list of places I always mean to stop by and check out, but for whatever reason never seem to, is Wolfies Pizzamia. That's why I was excited to go to a recent blogger preview event to sample the menu and learn more about Wolfies.

Wolfies Pizzamia is owned by Michael Hennessey,  the same person who owns White Wolf Cafe, hence the name. Michael Hennessey has been in the restaurant business for a long time, but he really got started in the business by way of opening an antiques store.

In 1991 he purchased an old building in the quaint Ivanhoe neighborhood on Orange avenue and opened up the Orange Avenue Antique Mall. It was originally his idea to lease space to sellers of antiques and offer coffee, candy and ice cream to visitors. It did not take long before the antique store started to become more popular for its food than for the antiques found inside.

As the demand for food kept growing, eventually the antique store was a thing of the past and the restaurant was in full force. Of course a name change was in order so Hennessey named his new venture after his white German shepherd, Casper, who reminded him of a white wolf.

Nearly 22 years later White Wolf Cafe is still doing a pretty brisk business and has become a staple of the Ivanhoe and Downtown Orlando communities. In addition to an extravagant Sunday brunch,  the menu is full of salads, sandwiches, steaks, and seafood served up in a unique space that was never designed to be a restaurant.

In opening Wolfies Pizzamia, Michael Hennessey had a similar idea to open up a restaurant in an unused space that was not really intended to be a restaurant. Just a few doors down from White Wolf Cafe, Wolfies has a very unique and rustic old world charm that is reminiscent of eateries in New York's west village.

Almost everything on the menu including all of the breads, pasta, dough, salumi, and most of the cheeses are made in house and what other ingredients they do use are sourced locally and sustainably when available. Chef AJ Haines even cures all of his meats and cheeses in house, so don't ask for boring old pepperoni on your pizza. All sausages and charcuterie are aged and seasoned in a charcuterie drying cabinet that is on display in the dining room.

We started our tasting adventure with a skewer of Compressed Melon topped with Prosciutto, Fried Basil and Blue Cheese.

A perfect savory and sweet treat to whet our appetites.

Our next dish was a Mini Charcuterie Plate of Bresaola, Filleto, House Cured Provolone with a baguette and a side of pig butter.

The flavor from the house cured meats and cheese was superb.

Our first pizza was The College Park. It is topped with Bechamel, Mozzarella, Ricotta, Spinach, Heirloom Tomatoes and Mushrooms.

The second pizza we sampled was the Quatro Formagio, topped with Tomatoes, Mozzarella, Bleu Cheese, Brie, and Provolone.

Our third pizza was the Burano that is topped with Mozzarella, Prosciutto, Arugula Salad and Goat Cheese.

The dough on all three pizzas was perfectly cooked with just the right amount of thickness and crispness to support all of the toppings. Everyone really enjoyed them. As I said earlier, don't ask for your basic pizza toppers like pepperoni here at Wolfies. All toppings available are of a gourmet quality and most of the meat choices consist of  Prosciutto, Sopressata, house made meatballs and house made sausage.

Speaking of house made meatballs, our next dish was the House Made Meatballs with a garlic Crostini.

These were very robust and full of flavor.

The Pasta Marinara was also a nice treat.

The pasta is made in house and the accompanying sauce was delicious.

One of the highlights of the evening was the Red Wine Braised Beef Brisket.

It was served with truffle mashed potatoes, Broccolini, Onion Strings and a Red Wine glaze. The meat tasted phenomenal and I have to say  this is a must have dish at Wolfies.

For dessert we had a Shot Glass Tiramisu with a Melletti Cioccolato Whip that was a Very light and flavorful ending to our evening.

I have to admit that i was really impressed with just about everything at Wolfies Pizzamia. From the fresh breads and house made pastas to the house cured meats and cheeses, Wolfies is a top notch Central Florida eatery that you should not overlook. I personally can not wait to return, and I recommend  you to check them out  soon.
