The Parkview

136 S Park Ave.
Winter Park, FL 32789

View Website Here

Downtown Winter Park has been known as a foodie destination for quite some time, and it's quite the popular spot for Winter Park Locals.

With restaurants like Luma and Prato with local celebrity chef Brandon McGlamery, The Coop by John Rivers and a host of other great restaurants that fill up the area, one is sure to find something great to eat.

The Parkview once upon a time was known as Eola Wine Company, which was a cool place to grab a glass of your favorite wine, or sample something new, but offered nothing in the way of food. Back in 2015 Eola Wine Company was sold, and the the location occupying 136 S. Park Avenue turned into The Parkview.

Chef Brad Holmes is the current executive chef, and he is doing everything in his power to make sure The Parkview gets its place on the map as an official destination for the cool kids and foodies alike that visit Winter Park.

Everything here is made using only the finest and freshest ingredients possible, when they are available. Chef Brad is also making sure all of his assistants know the menu inside and out, because he is very big on quality and consistency, and that's a really good thing.

The menu here has a big focus on small bites and bar fare, because after all, wine and food go hand in hand. Items like Baked Brie, Baked Gnocchi, Beer Cheese & Pretzels, Confit Chicken Wings, and a truly amazing Truffle Mac & Cheese are great items to enjoy while sampling a flight of wine, or enjoying one of the many specialty craft beers available.

The Confit Duck, Pulled Pork and the Roasted Artichoke crostini’s are enough to share, or simply enjoy it all to yourself. Charcuterie Boards and a variety of fresh salads are also plentiful here with assorted meats accompanied with local jam, house cured olives, chef’s butter, grapes, sweet pickled peppers, caper berries and walnuts, and a variety of fresh greens used in the salads.

If you require a more complete meal, Chef Brad and The Parkview have you covered there also, with a nice selection of chef’s specials and a flatbread selection that will leave you full and satisfied. Items like Braised Short Rib Wellington, Fresh Catch en Papillote, Roasted Lamb, Roasted Bone Marrow, Thai Curry Mussels and a Confit Duck flatbread are wonderfully delicious and wholesome meals to cure your dinner cravings.

The Birdwatcher is a wine flight of crisp white wines featuring wines from Montinore Estate, Font-Mars, Terranoble, and Pazo das Bruxas. If you are not sure what you want, or like, The Parkview has a good selection of flights to choose from. If wine is not your thing, they have an incredible craft beer selection too.

Spring Salad was light and refreshing and features field greens, poached pear, dried cherries, smoked bleu cheese, candied walnuts and a champagne vinaigrette.

The Roasted Artichoke Crostini is pretty outstanding with roasted artichokes, red pepper pesto, pickled red onions, arugula and Manchego cheese.

Truffle Mac & Cheese is quite a popular dish at a lot of restaurants these days, but the one served up at The Parkview is quite spectacular. This is made with smoked Gouda cheese, Crimini mushrooms, Parmesan, Truffle oil and bread crumbs. This is a great dish to share at the table, but one bite into it, and you may try to put it all away yourself.

Aside of being beautifully presented, the Roasted Lamb is herb crusted and served with sauteed olives, roasted red peppers, artichoke and spinach, Tzatziki sauce and chili oil for a slight touch of heat on the end.

The Fresh Catch en Papillote is a classic French style of cooking in a parchment packet that features fresh fish of the day, and this day it was fresh Yellowtail cooked with crab butter, summer squash, zucchini slaw, lemon and herbs and served along side roasted potatoes, and green bean almandine. This is a very traditional dish, and the flavor was nothing short of extraordinary.

Chocolate Mousse with bacon cookies was an off the menu special dessert and it was a wonderful ending to our time at The Parkview.

The Parkview still has an incredible selection of wines in its current form, but now they also have an incredible selection of food and craft beers.

Since the the transition from Eola Wine Company, they have had a couple of head chefs come through the doors and pretty much build a menu from scratch with a very small kitchen that only has the bare necessities.

When you consider this, and the quality of food and wine here, this place is pretty amazing, and Chef Brad is doing an excellent job of adding yet another great dining option to the historic Winter Park area.

The Parkview is open on Sunday to Wednesday from 11 am to 12 am, and from Thursday to Saturday from 11 am to 1:45 am. They serve food late here and they also have a really good weekend brunch and happy hour specials with Tuesday Trivia.

The new Spanish tapas restaurant in Winter Park, Bulla Gastrobar is stepping up its lunch game with a recently added prix fixe menu, available Monday through Friday at it's Winter Park (and Coral Gables) locations.

Bulla Gastrobar is a fun casual gathering place inspired by the most popular tapas restaurants in Spain. It is the brainchild of the former owner of Por Fin, Carlos Centurion. Much like those famous gastro bars in Spain, the bar at Bulla is the center of attraction, but the emphasis is on quality gastronomic creations.

Bulla (boo-ya), which is slang for chatter and what people are talking about, is devoted to delight you by serving your favorite Spanish and Catalan dishes such as “Patatas Bravas”, “Huevos Bulla”, Buñuelos de Bacalao and other tapas as well as tantalizing daily specials from the kitchen.

The prix fixe menu, which includes popular dishes like the Huevos Bulla, Gazpacho Andaluz, Bulla Burger and Torrija, starts at $19.00. Guests can select one dish each from the first course and second course as part of the special. For $23, guests can also add one of the included desserts.

Some of the first course options are Garbanzo Frito, a chickpea stew with chorizo and kale, Gazpacho Andaluz, a Spanish chilled vegetable soup and the popular Huevos ‘Bulla’ with eggs, homemade potato chips, Serrano ham, potato foam and truffle oil.

Second course offerings sound pretty tasty with options like the Mero En Adobo Grouper fried Cádiz style with aioli potatoes, avocado and a seasonal salad. The Futbol club is a breaded chicken breast with bacon, chicken confit, lettuce, tomato, mustard aioli and pan de cristal. The Bulla Burger, Arroz A La Cubana and the Brioche De Vegetales round out the rest of the offerings.

Flan de Coco, and the Torrija (pictured above) with caramelized brioche, turrón ice cream and honey are your dessert options.

The two course menu with no dessert is $19.00, and the three course menu with dessert is $23.00

Reel Fish Coastal Kitchen + Bar Renovations Near Completion

1234 N. Orange Ave.
Winter Park, FL 32789

Restaurant industry veteran Fred Thimm (Hard Rock, The Palm), has begun renovations at a well known Winter Park address that will soon house his first independent venture, Reel Fish Coastal Kitchen + Bar.

Taking its inspiration from classic Florida fish camps and offering coastal cuisine in an inland setting, the restaurant will specialize in sustainably sourced seafood from the Sunshine State’s Atlantic and Gulf coasts.

Remodeling is currently underway in the building recently vacated by The Ravenous Pig at 1234 Orange Ave. Reel Fish Coastal Kitchen + Bar anticipates opening by early February 2017. Seating capacity will be 150.

“Reel Fish Coastal Kitchen + Bar will be a contemporary version of a classic fish camp, serving fresh Florida seafood prepared in a southern style and served in a casual, family friendly environment,” said Thimm. “With Winter Park being located almost directly between Florida’s Atlantic and Gulf coasts we’re in the perfect place to receive daily shipments from the state’s top sustainable seafood purveyors.”

The kitchen at Reel Fish Coastal Kitchen + Bar will be led by chefs Michael Zajac and Michael Huffler. Zajac, an alumnus of Houston’s restaurants and former owner of High Cotton in Atlanta, will oversee developing the culinary team. Huffler will spearhead the restaurant’s daily blackboard specials and core recipes, which will feature creative takes on fresh-caught fish not typically found on many inland Florida seafood restaurant menus, including tile fish, trigger fish, sheephead, hogfish and other local species.

The Reel Fish menu will also include fish camp classics like fried seafood platters, Shrimp & Creamy Cheese Grits, whole fried market fish, such as yellow tail snapper, and Low Country Boils featuring shrimp, bay scallops and crab legs.

Central to the restaurant will be a raw bar serving oysters on the half shell, broiled and steamed, as well as ceviche and peel & eat fresh Florida shrimp. For the meat lover, Reel Fish’s offerings will include farm-to-table, GMA-free beef & brisket blend burgers from Creekstone Farms, as well as a rotating selection of premium beef cuts. Signature salads will include the Shrimp & Avocado Louie and a fresh tuna salad.

The bar at Reel Fish will offer “coastal cocktails”, local craft beers and a boutique list of sought after reasonably priced wines curated by Alex Plotkin, owner of Chops Restaurant in Philadelphia and former National Director of Wine & Spirits for The Palm. Reel Fish will also offer happy hour food and beverage specials at the bar daily.

Overseeing day-to-day operations at the restaurant will be Chrissy Benoit, who recently joined Reel Fish as General Manager. Benoit brings extensive hospitality industry experience with her, including more than a decade owning and operating popular South Florida establishments The Little House Restaurant, Adventurous Palate and Havana Hideout.

In 2009, Benoit and Havana Hideout were featured on the acclaimed Food Network’s series Diners, Drive-in and Dives. In 2013, The Little House, which Benoit designed, received a prestigious “Outstanding Renovation” Award from the Florida Redevelopment Agency for rescuing a historic cottage in Boynton Beach and giving it new life as a “charming and lively restaurant.”

Reel Fish Coastal Kitchen + Bar will open to the public on Thursday, Feb. 9 for dinner service only. Weekend brunch service will debut on Feb. 18-19 and lunch service will begin on Tuesday, March 7. Reel Fish Coastal Kitchen + Bar will be open every Tuesday through Sunday.

Cocina 214

151 E. Welbourne Ave,
Winter Park, FL 32789
407-790-7997

Whenever I am thinking about dining out in beautiful Downtown Winter Park, often times Mexican food does not cross my mind.

There are lots of dining options in that area from upscale to casual, but for some reason I often overlook Cocina 214. I am a big fan of authentic Mexican food and the Americanized Tex-Mex food as well, so I was delighted to attend a new menu preview event for Cocina 214.

What exactly is Cocina 214 you may ask? Cocina is Spanish for Kitchen, and the 214 part comes from the Dallas area code, because the owners, who are from Texas, missed the Tex-Mex and Mexican foods they grew up on. The menu is full of contemporary Mexican and Tex-Mex inspired dishes that combine bold flavors with the freshest local ingredients. Items like Queso Fundido and Guacamole at Cocina 214 may be your average Tex-Mex standard fare, but you will be hard pressed to find Fried Avocado Bites at any other Mexican restaurant in Central Florida.

The same goes with the rest of the menu here too. Items like Snapper Frito Tacos, Truffle and Mushroom Quesadillas, Cauli Frito Tacos and Corn Crusted Mahi are sure to impress the adventurous palate. If you want more traditional, Cocina has that too, with Chicken Tamales, Brisket Quesadilla and an assortment of Tacos and Fajitas.

Fried Avocado Bites are lightly breaded hass avocados fried and served with chipotle cream dipping sauce, and are very delicious.

The Mango Ceviche features snapper, serrano peppers, red onion, red bell pepper, citrus and mango.

For something a little lighter, Isidro’s Caesar salad is made with romaine lettuce, cotija cheese, fried onions strings, grape tomatoes, homemade croutons and Caesar dressing.

The Mexican Corn is a tasty Aperitivo, or appetizer with grilled corn, cayenne pepper, lime, cotija cheese and queso fresco.

The Dragon Fruit Margarita is sweet and flavorful, and is only available for a limited time. The margarita menu at Cocina 214 features everything from house made specialties to Skinny Ritas and even a “Pop Rocks Rita.”

Enchiladas are served Mexican-style with romaine lettuce, queso fresco, onions, sour cream, grape tomatoes & veggie rice. You can add protein to them such as chicken or beef and you have an option of sauces as well.

Snapper Frito Tacos are traditional Mexican street tacos with lightly fried wild snapper topped with coastal slaw, pico de gallo and a chipotle cream sauce.

For an awesome vegetarian option, the Cauli Frito tacos are lightly fried cauliflower, coastal slaw, red bell peppers and chipotle cream sauce. These tacos were crispy and tasty and had a great taste.

Another item not readily found at most Mexican restaurants, the Snapper Veracruz with wild snapper, tomato, olive, caper, herb topping and veggie rice was quite delightful.

For the burger lover, Maria’s Gourmet Burger is sure to hit the spot. This burger features grilled pineapple on an Angus beef burger, Olde Hearth Bread poppy seed bun, Monterrey jack cheese and is served with grilled Mexican corn.

You can never go wrong with Churros for a sweet ending. The Churros at Cocina 214 come with a dulce de leche dipping sauce and are fantastic.

If you’re looking to dine out in the charming Winter Park Historic District, or want an authentic Tex-Mex dinner, consider Cocina 214 and put it on your radar. This restaurant is perfect for every occasion and you and your guests will be sure to enjoy.

The bar features a happy hour on Monday to Thursday from 4:30pm to 6:30pm with $5 214 Rocks & Frozen margaritas, $3 Draft Beers and $5 Wells

Brunch is served Saturday & Sundays from 11:00am to 3:00pm with $3 Brunch Mimosas

Keke's Breakfast Cafe

345 West Fairbanks Ave
Winter Park, FL 32789
407-629-1400
View Website Here

Keke’s Breakfast Cafe has always been a favorite of a lot of people I have spoke to over the years, but I never got around to trying them out until a few weeks ago. If you are not familiar with Keke’s they are a small chain of breakfast and lunch only restaurants that opens at 7:00 am and closes at 2:00 pm. Currently there are 13 locations with more soon to open throughout Central Florida.

Breakfast covers the usual line up of omelets, pancakes, waffles, french toast etc. Lunch includes selections of burgers, wraps, and a variety of sandwiches and paninis. All of the food at Keke’s is handmade, using quality ingredients and fresh fruits and vegetables that are delivered daily and served up in a clean environment with great service.

The food here can best be described as American comfort food with a gourmet twist. On my visit we did breakfast items only, and selected a few dishes. All of our food was excellent. It was crowded when we arrived around 11:00 and we were told there would be a wait of fifteen minutes, but we only waited about five minutes.

The Home Fries with Bacon and Cheddar Cheese were pretty awesome, and are really great for a hangover remedy. This comes in a large enough portion that if you just wanted to order this only, you would be satisfied.

The Southwest Omelet is filled with tomatoes, onion, jalapeño and pepper jack cheese, petal sauce and is served with salsa a side of home fries and your choice of bread. This was omelette was fluffy and tasty with a touch of spice.

I ordered the “Create Your Own Combo” with French toast, two eggs sunny side up and two strips of bacon. The French toast at Keke’s is not to be missed. I only had the basic regular version, and it was among the best French toast I have had. I hear that the stuffed versions are pretty spectacular as well.

Whatever part of town you are in, look up the nearest Keke’s Breakfast Cafe location the next time you are in the mood for breakfast, lunch, brunch, or whatever you want to call it. There is a reason they have won Orlando Weekly’s Best Of Orlando award for breakfast two times in three years.

Marlow's Tavern

1008 S. Orlando Avenue (17-92)
Winter Park, FL 32789
(407) 960-3670
View Website Here

Marlow's Tavern is a slightly more upscale and gourmet take on a neighborhood grill and bar. It's a great place to meet up with family and friends, but it is also intimate and cozy enough for a date and dine.

Based in Atlanta, the restaurant chain has thirteen locations in Georgia and currently there are two in Central Florida, with plans for more. The first Marlow's tavern opened up at Pointe Orlando on International Drive in 2012 and the Winter Park location opened up in 2013. The Winter Park location took over a former Mc Donalds, and they are making good use of the old Mc Donalds indoor playground by turning into an indoor patio-bar.

The menu at Marlow's features a selection of American tavern fare with a combination of classic dishes that include everything from burgers to wraps to shrimp and grits. The inside design is focused on modern comfort utilizing a black and white motif to create a sleek fashionable look. That overall look and design is accented by black and white photographs and Chicago style brick walls at most locations.

A neighborhood feel is also accomplished with an open kitchen that invites diners to observe the chefs at work and communal tables surround the bar areas. Each Marlow's also features several flat screen TVs that  are discreetly incorporated, “in-the-round”, allowing guests to enjoy a variety of shows while they dine.

I recently met up with some family members here to have a family dinner and celebrate a few birthdays towards the end of December. Although the atmosphere was a little odd at first, the food was really good.

J.T.’s Kettle Chips are crispy potato chips topped with Gorgonzola cheese, bacon, Roma tomato and scallions, and are a great way to start your meal.

While I applaud the effort, the Truffled Parmesan Fries really lacked any serious flavor, they were OK, but just kind of plain.

I was however, impressed with the Prime Rib French Dip. This was moist, tender and flavorful down to the last bite.

Burgers are a strong point for Marlow's and the Tavern Burger is no exception. Thick, juicy and delicious.

The Roast Turkey Club with organic turkey, avocado spread, baby arugula, Roma tomato, apple-wood smoked bacon and provolone on a Toasted Ciabatta bun was simple yet good.

I am a big fan of Shrimp & Grits, so I almost always try them out if they are offered at any restaurant. The white cheddar grit cake and spinach combined with succulent shrimp at Marlow's is top notch.

The Buffalo Chicken Wrap may sound ordinary, but with spicy chicken, shredded lettuce, tomato, jalapeno jack cheese, ranch dressing in a grilled tortilla, I can assure you its no ordinary wrap.

We didn't have room for dessert, partially because we really enjoyed the Stella on draught.

Overall Marlow’s is a great meeting place for all seasons. They have spacious and open areas that allow guests to enjoy cocktails and great foods at a reasonable price. Check them out sometime soon. Marlow's is open from 11:30 am to 12:00 am.

Shake Shack

119 N Orlando Avenue
Winter Park, FL 32789

(321)-203-5130
View Website Here

The newest location of Shake Shack is open for business in Winter Park.

In case you are unfamiliar with the brand, Shake Shack is the burger joint with a cult like following that started from a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park in Manhattan by Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG). The cart was such a success, that USHG won the bid to open a permanent kiosk in the Park and the legend of  Shake Shack was born. To this day, you can find patrons at the original location gladly waiting in a one hour long line.

Shake Shake calls itself a modern day “roadside” burger stand. Although the menu is pretty simple with only a few burger and hot dog choices they also serve cheese fries, frozen custard, shakes, beer, wine, and they even serve doggy treats. Almost anywhere they have opened up, the Shack has been an instant neighborhood fixture. The Winter Park location is the first one to open in Central Florida, and the fourth one in Florida overall. The other three locations are in Miami, Coral Gables, and Boca Raton.

The Winter Park location opened on July 30, 2014, and is situated alongside a very picturesque Lake Killarney with an expansive outdoor patio space, lounge chairs and a fire pit.

The  Inside is pretty roomy as well with plenty of open table seating and large booths.

One of my favorites is the SmokeShack. It's a cheese burger served with applewood smoked bacon, cherry  peppers and shack sauce.

Of course cheese fries are always mandatory whenever I visit.

Although you can request a burger any way you like, the menu is simple. Offerings include The Shack Burger, Smoke Shack, Shroom Burger, Shack Stack and Hamburger.

No stop to Shake Shack  is complete without ordering one of their frozen treats.

Everything from custards to concretes and milkshakes are available. Most locations do have a set menu, but there is always a monthly flavor and special flavors unique to each location.

Unique to the Winter Park location is  the Winters Wonderland concrete. Five percent of all proceeds from this concrete will be donated to the BASE camp children's cancer foundation.

I have been frequenting the Shack since they opened in Miami, and they are one of my favorite burger joints...anywhere. What Shake Shack serves is just a plain good old fashioned burger in an unpretentious atmosphere with quality ingredients, and that's what makes them good.

I can see myself being a regular at this location. Stop by soon and check them out if you have never been...you might find me out by the lake eating a Smoke Shack.
